Vadapattinam Selva Vinayagar Temple is one of the oldest and most famous temples in TamilNadu. Although there are no specific documents about the exact history of this temple, local traditions and legends speak of its antiquity.


Dugoji Maharaj and the 11 Swayambu Vinayakas: 


  1. According to a legend, there were 11 Swayambu Vinayakas at this place. Once a Maratha minister named Dugoji Maharaj was passing through this place and the wheel of his chariot broke.
  2. Unable to understand the reason, he worshipped Lord Ganesha. 
  3. That night Ganesha appeared in a dream and told him about himself and that he should dig himself and build a temple. 
  4. It is said that this temple came into being because Dugoji Maharaj acted on his dream.


Structure as solid as concrete: 



The construction of this temple is very solid. How it was built is still a mystery. Some say it was built using ancient technology like concrete.

Do's and Don'ts

Remove Footwear: Remove your shoes and socks before entering the temple premises. There are usually designated areas to leave your footwear.

Maintain Cleanliness: Keep the temple premises clean. Dispose of any waste in the designated bins and avoid littering.

Observe Silence: Maintain a quiet and respectful demeanour. Avoid loud conversations and activities that might disturb other devotees.

Respect the Sanctum Sanctorum: Offer your prayers and respects to the deity from a respectful distance if entry to the sanctum sanctorum is restricted.

Contribute to the Temple: If possible, make donations to the temple for its maintenance and activities. Donations can be made at designated counters or boxes.

Seek Blessings: After darshan, seek blessings from the priests and accept prasadam (blessed food) with respect.

Do Not Bring Meat or Alcohol: Do not bring non-vegetarian food, alcohol, or any intoxicants into the temple premises.

Avoid Taking Photos: Do not take photos or videos inside the temple without permission. Photography is often restricted, especially in the sanctum sanctorum.

Do Not Touch the Deities: Avoid touching the idols or deities unless explicitly allowed. Respect the sanctity of the sacred objects.

Avoid Eating Inside the Temple: Do not consume food inside the temple premises unless it is prasadam provided by the temple.

Do Not Enter Restricted Areas: Respect signs and barriers indicating restricted areas. Do not enter areas meant only for priests or temple staff.

Do Not Engage in Argumentative Behavior: Avoid arguing or causing disturbances within the temple premises. Maintain a peaceful and respectful attitude.

Dress Code

Wear traditional and modest clothing. Men should wear dhotis or trousers, and women should wear sarees or salwar kameez. Avoid shorts, sleeveless tops, and other revealing attire.
