  1. The Subramanya Swamy Temple in Cheleri, Kerala, is an ancient and revered shrine dedicated to Lord Subramanya, the Hindu god of war. 
  2. While the temple's exact origins are shrouded in mystery, its rich history and spiritual significance are deeply embedded in the cultural fabric of the region.


Legends and Folklore:


  1. Legends surrounding the temple's origins point to its connection with the renowned sage Agastya Muni. 
  2. According to local folklore, Agastya Muni, while traveling through the dense forests of Cheleri, stumbled upon a divine spring. 
  3. As he rested by the spring, he was approached by a group of local inhabitants seeking guidance and protection from a fearsome demon that had been terrorising their village.
  4. Moved by their plight, Agastya Muni performed a series of rituals and invoked the divine power of Lord Subramanya. 
  5. The deity, pleased by Agastya Muni's devotion, appeared and vanquished the demon, restoring peace to the village. 
  6. In gratitude, the villagers constructed a temple at the site of the divine spring, enshrining Lord Subramanya as the primary deity.

Do's and Don'ts

  1. Dress modestly: Opt for clothing that covers your shoulders and knees. This is a sign of respect for the sanctity of the temple.
  2. Maintain decorum: Speak softly, avoid loud noises, and behave respectfully towards other devotees and the temple staff.
  3. Follow temple etiquette: Remove your footwear before entering the temple complex. There may be designated areas to leave your shoes. Wash your hands and feet before entering the sanctum sanctorum (inner shrine) if possible.
  4. Offer prayers and participate in rituals: If you are comfortable doing so, participate in the temple rituals and offer prayers. Observe silently if ongoing rituals are taking place.
  5. Seek blessings from the priest: You can approach the temple priest with respect and seek blessings.
  6. Donate (optional): Donations towards the temple's upkeep are welcome. There might be donation boxes located within the temple complex.


  1. Consume non-vegetarian food or alcohol: Refrain from consuming these items within the temple complex, as they are considered disrespectful in many Hindu temples.
  2. Smoke or chew tobacco: Smoking and chewing tobacco are strictly prohibited on the temple grounds.
  3. Litter: Dispose of waste responsibly in designated bins.
  4. Take photos inside the sanctum sanctorum (inner shrine): Photography is often restricted in the inner sanctum. It's advisable to turn off flash photography throughout the temple complex.
  5. Touch idols or sacred objects: Unless it's part of a specific puja (prayer ceremony), avoid touching the idols or sacred objects within the temple.
  6. Be disrespectful: Show respect towards the deities, the temple, and other devotees.


Dress Code

Both men and women should avoid clothing that is revealing or overly casual. For women, it is advisable to wear long skirts or dresses that cover the knees and tops with sleeves that cover the shoulders.

Bus: Buses are available from the airport to Kannur town, from where you can take another bus or taxi to Cheleri.

Travel Options from the Railway Station:

Taxi/Cab: Taxis and auto-rickshaws are available outside the railway station. The travel time is around 30 minutes.

Bus: You can take a bus from the Kannur bus stand, which is near the railway station, to Cheleri.
